Join us for an original and exciting adventure this summer as Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind partners with Nature Discovery. We are looking for students and staff to participate in field birding as well as investigating the living laboratory with over forty species of frogs, turtles, snakes and salamanders awaiting us with Jim McGrath and Nature Discovery in Williamston. We will be overnight camping nearby and traveling to Nature Discovery for four days of nature programming highlighted by learning to identify many Michigan birds by song and habitat. Late afternoons and evenings will be filled with swimming, boating, cooking, and campfires and much more as we live in the natural environment for five days and nights. For more information please contact Donna Posont Donnabutterfly50@gmail.com. Camp dates: June 24-28 Camp cost: $350 Scholarships available for qualifying participants.

MPVI Family Camp 2012 is a three-in-one event! Friday night, we will have fun together as families at Camp Tuhsmeheta- which is always a great time. You can meet new and old friends, meet some of the summer program staff, catch up with what our kids are doing, find out what is working well for other families and what we are all struggling with, and network some solutions – or just have a great time without the “blind kid talk” – whatever works for you!

On Saturday we will travel to East Grand Rapids (about 30 minutes away) to participate in VI Sports and Activity Day. This event is sponsored by Dr. Patrick Droste, Spectrum Health and Grand Rapids Lions Club and is powered by a number of volunteers from many organizations, including the Lions of Grand Valley State University. Lunch is included on-site, sponsored by the Lions. The event includes wonderful opportunities for your kids – children who are blind or visually impaired and siblings alike – to try a number of different adapted sports like goal ball, beep baseball, rock climbing, dancing, tandem cycling and other great activities. For the less athletically inclined there are new, accessible, craft activities, too.

After the event is over we will invite families who participated in Sports Day who were not part of Family Camp to come to camp with us and enjoy an evening of fun and hospitality! Activities will include canoeing or swimming, weather permitting, a great meal, and all the normal campfire fun we can muster. So please join us for this fantastic event! It’s a great opportunity, if you are a little apprehensive about sending your child to an overnight camp, to visit and check out the staff and facilities.

On Sunday we will enjoy a few relaxing hours, some new nature crafts, and time to recharge for the fast approaching end of the school year. Anyone with concerns about their child’s latest IEP can get help, and we can talk about whatever issues you may have and discuss summer options for your child. One last canoe trip may be in order! It will be a great way to end the weekend and welcome in summer!
